Facing her first mother’s day since her son, Trayvon Martin, was killed, Sybrina Fulton has released a video in which she calls for review of state laws like Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” statute, which is being used by George Zimmerman in his defense for shooting the teen to death in February.
The one-minute video, released Friday on hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons’ GlobalGrind.com, features Fulton speaking for other mothers who have lost children to gun violence as she appeals for re-examination of state laws similar to the one at the center of the conflict between Zimmerman and Trayvon.
“On Sunday, I’m going to say a prayer for other mothers across America who share this unbearable pain,” she said somberly. The website directs its readers to contact their state’s governors and to get information from SecondChanceOnShootFirst.org, which seeks review of state gun policies nationwide.
Meanwhile Zimmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, said he expects to receive evidence against his client in the trial soon, but that he needs time to review the material and redact the names of witnesses and other information before handing it over to the media, according to the Miami Herald. O’Mara appealed to Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester to seal the case file, but the judge declined. Evidence must be provided to the media once it is given to the defense according to Florida law.
The documents are expected to be provided to O’Mara’s firm on Monday, but the defense has been trying to slow down or delay the procedure. “We want to do everything we can to protect the sanctity of the process and the safety of the witnesses,” O’Mara said in a statement in April.
