Most American Voters Want Donald Trump to Ditch His Twitter Account: Poll

Most American voters want President-elect Donald Trump to ditch his personal Twitter account, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

Nearly 60% of U.S. voters say Trump should stop tweeting, a Quinnipiac University national poll has found. Trump has continued to be outspoken on the social media platform since winning the election, most recently digging into the New York Times over a planned meeting with the newspaper.

“Voters tell President-elect Donald Trump, ‘You’ve got the job. Now be a leader not a tweeter,'” Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, said in a statement. “And we’re watching to make sure you put the country, not the Trump brand, first.”

Trump told 60 Minutes earlier this month that he would refrain from tweeting when he’s President. “I’m going to be very restrained, if I use it at all, I’m going to be very restrained,” he said. Trump added that Twitter was “tremendous” and a “modern form of communication” that helped him win the White House.

He has more than 15 million Twitter followers. President Barack Obama plans to relinquish the @POTUS Twitter handle to Trump on Jan. 20, 2017.

The Quinnipiac survey was conducted between Nov. 17 and Nov. 20 and interviewed 1,071 voters nationwide. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
