While millions are being told to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Matthew, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s hurricane hunters flew directly into the monster storm.
In a video posted Friday morning, Captain Tim Gallagher and his crew are shown flying through rough turbulence into the eye of the now-Category 3 storm. When they reach the eye, visibility increases and the plane stops shaking so violently.
Matthew is set to become the strongest tropical storm to hit the east coast of Florida since Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992. Matthew is already responsible for the deaths of at least 283 people in Haiti as it traveled through the Caribbean.
